MultiLing Corporation -- September 26, 2007
This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
A few years after graduating from BYU with a joint JD-MBA degree,
Michael Sneddon was investigating different options for starting his own
business. At the time he was working with a company that needed patents
translated from French to English.
After searching, he couldn't find anyone to do the translation work. He
realized that high-quality, technical translation was scarce, although the
need for it was great. He teamed up with his classmate Daniel Oswald, and
MultiLing was born.
MultiLing Corporation primarily provides translation services for
technical documents, including patents, manuals, software and Web sites.
From its humble beginnings in 1988, the company has grown into an
international translation company with offices in Provo, Germany, Italy,
Peru, Japan and Korea and with major clients such as Procter and Gamble,
Fujitsu, Dell, General Electric Healthcare and other Fortune 500
companies.
One of the major changes implemented almost a decade ago, Michael tells
me, was switching the business model from in-house translation to overseas
teams that do the work in their home countries using translation memory
technology. The company has 50 employees at its Provo headquarters, more
than 100 employees worldwide, and works with 460 linguists around the
world. MultiLing can translate into 40 different languages.
Michael says they integrate highly qualified professionals with
state-of-the-art translation memory technology. The diverse work
environment also contributes to the company's success. The majority of
MultiLing employees in the Provo office speak and write at least two
languages fluently.
Mistakes in translating patent documents can lead to millions of
dollars in losses. With its streamlined process and strict quality control
procedures, Michael says MultiLing Corporation strives to protect its
clients from such costly mistakes, especially as more businesses go
global.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
